Are You Playing It Safe Or Doing It Scared?

Well are you?

Playing it safe I mean.

The hardest part about being a business owner isn’t developing your product, reaching your ideal customers, or even dealing with what your crazy aunt Ethel thinks of your new business dream.

The hardest part about starting and running a business is the same issue that artists, musicians, writers, law students and medical interns all face.

The hardest part is taking the scary steps towards doing something so great that it will alter your life. It will grow you, stretch you, and change you.

Growing a business is scary. But the rewards are worth it.

I have been an entrepreneur for almost seven years and during that time I have coached and mentored many business owners. I see the same thing over and over again with hundreds of women.

Starting their business was easy and safe, until it wasn’t. There are hundreds of people who “start” a business each and every day. By start I mean, have an idea, buy a domain name, change their Facebook status and call themselves a business owner.

These are the would-be business owners that never make it past the “start” phase. That is the extent of their commitment and dedication to growing a solid business. When it gets the least bit scary, they go and hide in a corner. They might begin the process of building a team, developing their product or any wide number of activities that sound like they are building their business. But they won’t do the hard things, the scary things that push them way outside their comfort zone.

They are playing it safe.

And they won’t gain the reward. They just won’t. Because great things always happen outside our comfort zone. The only way to grow a solid, thriving business that completely transforms your life is to…

Do. It. Scared.

“If I’m not a little bit nauseous when I’m done, I probably didn’t show up like I should’ve showed up.

— Brene Brown

Here are six ways I think you can show up and do it scared!

When you are feeling scared or nervous about something new you need to learn or do in your business, change it up. Instead of thinking of yourself as nervous or scared, think of yourself as excited.

Change “I’m nervous about speaking in front of this group of 50 entrepreneurs.” to “I am excited about the opportunity to speak in front of 50 entrepreneurs!”

You will be telling your brain that you are excited and then you will begin to feel excited. You will see the speaking engagement as an opportunity to grow and share about your business.

Your why is based on your core values, the things that mean the most to you. The talents and strengths that ooze out of you and bring you the most joy reside inside your core values, your WHY.

I believe that all people come into this world with a distinct desire to be of value, to do something of importance and to serve others well. Your why is living inside that place.

Once you learn to always start with your why, you will inspire those around you. You will have the drive to push through and solve any problems that come up in your business. You will maintain the energy and excitement to show up daily and get things done.

Are you are waiting for the fear to subside and feel ready to take the next huge step in your business or do that thing that seems crazy hard? I hate to break it to you, but you will be waiting for a while. It just won’t happen.

Action breeds confidence. So as you are waiting to feel ready and confident you are actually moving backwards. The longer you wait to act, the harder it will be.

Get moving. Take action. Confidence will come.

Sometimes going it alone makes it so much harder.

Find yourself a partner in crime that will be there with you each step of the way in your business. They don’t have to be a part of your business. Just someone to hold you accountable and nudge you in the right direction. An accountability partner is a great way to face that fear.

Let’s be honest. The scariest part of just about anything is the unknown. Most of the time once we get going and just do it already, we feel 100% better. Most of the time we were scared for no reason at all.

The next time you find yourself standing on the edge, looking over, and almost talking yourself out of it, just jump.

Go for it. You will almost surely feel better immediately.

You can kill your business with the “what ifs”.

A lot of what we worry about or are scared of is so far out into the future that it shouldn’t even matter.

Focus on what is in front of you.

Of course, the vision of your business is important to the success of your business. You definitely need to know where you are going so you can get there. But worrying about what is so far down the pike that it probably won’t even be an issue when it arrives is such a waste of energy and time.

Not to mention, self sabotaging.

The next time you feel yourself playing it safe, try out one or two of these tips. Do it scared and watch your business take you and your life to the next level! No one ever goes anywhere fun “playing it safe.”
