The Power Of The Push Moment: How Everyday Courage Will Change Your Business

As a small business owner you are always looking for ways to increase your productivity, reach your goals, make more sales, serve your clients more efficiently and take care of your family in the process. 

But the secret weapon that will help you grow a thriving business that you truly love and serves you in a meaningful way? Courage. 

I am going to show you how to become the most courageous version of yourself. Not only will this completely change the results of your business but it will also allow you to live your best life. You will be happier as a mom, wife, daughter, friend and leader.

To really help you understand courage, let's start with something that we can all relate to as women and as busy moms; those feelings in your mind and body when you decide to get back into shape.

We all know it's hard to get back into shape. The moment you think about going to the gym your mind starts to try to talk you out of it. You hesitate and wonder if you have time for it. You start thinking of all the things you "should" be doing instead.

What happens in the next five seconds will decide your future of getting back into shape. This is your push moment. Will you stick to your guns and put your workout clothes on, get into your car and drive to the gym? Or will you talk yourself out of it?

My hope is that you push past all the fear of how out of shape you are and how much pain you are going to experience as you work to get back into shape, the overwhelmed feelings of fitting working out into your already busy schedule, and decide that you can do it. That you can make this small decision, this small act of courage and get back into working out and taking care of your body.

Now that you have made it to the gym the first day, you must continue to make this same decision. You must push past the fear and overwhelm and be courageous. Each and every day. Your fitness and health will only be changed if you make it a priority. 

Your muscles will get stronger and you will be less and less sore as the days go on. You will start to feel stronger, have more energy and maybe even lose some unwanted weight. 

Did you know that courage is just like your muscles? Courage is a skill that only improves through practice. It's not a trait that some innately have and some do not. We can all develop it over time.

I love how Mel Robbins defines courage. She says "courage is the ability to take action in the face of self-doubt, fear, uncertainty, overthinking or hesitation."

At first it is hard to take courageous action, just like our example of the gym. But as we push ourselves to be courageous in the everyday choices a funny thing happens. It gets easier and easier. 

In your business this same thing is true. Each time you push yourself to step outside your comfort zone, speak up, up level your skills, share your beloved product with the world and face rejection, or advocate for your needs, you complete a "courage workout." 

These are your push moments.

The moments throughout your day that you don't let self doubt, over-thinking or feelings of inadequacy keep you from being courageous and taking the actions that produce amazing results. 

When I feel the instinct or desire to act on a goal or commitment I use The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. This rule is everything I need to act during a push moment and have the courage to really go for what I want in my life and business. It is the everyday situations overtime that have changed not only my personal life but also my business. 

Here are three steps on how to take action during these push moments. 

IDENTIFY THE PUSH MOMENT

Throughout the day we are confronted with probably 50-100 push moments; from the alarm going off in the morning and deciding whether or not to hit the snooze button, finding ourselves scrolling mindlessly on Facebook, deciding when to check email during the day, to deciding to hire a virtual assistant for our business. 

When we feel the instinct to do something (like get out of bed when the alarm goes off so we don't oversleep and feel rushed in the morning) and we start to over-think and talk ourself out of doing what we instinctively know is best, this is our push moment. Being able to recognize these as they pop up through the day is crucial. 

As a business owner, here are some examples of push moments you probably are facing each day. 

  • hitting the snooze button
  • working out or skipping it so you can tackle your todo list faster
  • scrolling on Facebook instead of tackling that big project that is waiting for you
  • answering your phone during your PowerBlocks 
  • whether or not to say yes to something that you feel sure you don't have the time for
  • sticking to your quit time so you can focus on your family
  • hitting send on an email that has taken you out of your comfort zone

IMMEDIATELY COUNTDOWN 5-4-3-2-1

Start counting down from five immediately. As soon as you start to feel yourself talking yourself out of doing the thing you know you need to do, countdown from five. Mel Robbins explains this life changing process in her book The 5 Second Rule, which I highly recommend. It will truly change how you act on the things that scare you. 

AND MOVE...

Move your body. Pick up the phone and make the hard phone call. Put on your workout clothes and get in your car and drive to the gym. Click out of Facebook and open up that project that you have a deadline on. Write that blog post. Create that product. Shut down your email and get to work. 

Don't overthink. Don't hesitate. Don't rationalize. Just get moving!

Move on the important goals that your instinct is telling you are important things that will change your business. Move. Don't think. Just 5-4-3-2-1 MOVE!!
